Starred Review. The collapse of communism in Eastern Europe was a collection of complex domestic conflicts and economic discontents, argues this shrewd historical study. Historian Pleshakov (Stalin's Folly) surveys upheavals in postwar Eastern Europe, with a special focus on Poland, the mother of the Eastern European revolution. He finds a variegated tapestry of states with different degrees of economic and political liberalization and often considerable popular support for the welfare protections and social mobility they guaranteed citizens. They also enjoyed substantial latitude from Russia: the Berlin Wall, the author reports, was an East German initiative, only reluctantly approved by Moscow. The turbulence leading to 1989 was equally complicated and factional; the disturbances that brought down Communist regimes were often touched off by their own violations of Marxist orthodoxy—especially with that reliable riot starter, food price hikes. (Polish Solidarity leader Lech Walesa, with his proletarian opposition to industrial speedups, comes off here as something of a primitive communist himself.) Pleshakov's characterization of 1989 as a civil war is perhaps overstated, but his sardonic narrative offers a savvier, richer take than the usual hymns to national liberation. (Nov.)

Editors Shriver (history, Georgia Southern Univ.) and Leonard (dean, Divinity Sch., Wake Forest Univ.) introduce their work by observing that religious controversy, while sometimes discouraging, is also "illustrative of lively and creative process and structure." Their reference work captures some of that process in approximately 350 signed entries, written by religion or history scholars and ranging from a few paragraphs to eight pages. Diversity is evident in the wide range of subjects, e.g., Methodists, Baptists, hyper-Calvinism, Marian devotion, Lubavitch, and Wicca, as well as religious aspects of academic freedom and family values. Considering its theme, the volume is remarkably unbiased; for instance, the entry for homosexuality begins "Is it a sin or a special grace?" and offers scriptures and interpretations supporting both views. The usual weaknesses of edited works are evident here. Some entries are oversimplified (e.g., abolitionism) or do not reflect the most recent scholarship (e.g., Nell Painter's recent work on Sojourner Truth is not identified), and better cross-referencing, e.g., from "snake handling" to "serpent handling," would also have been helpful. In addition, many of the subjects are covered elsewhere. Still, what makes this work unique and useful, in addition to its focus on controversy, is the inclusion of separate entries for topics that tend to get buried within broader topics in other reference works. Earl Browning, M.Ed., is a native of Logan, West Virginia. He currently serves as president of Telecoach, Inc. an organization that conducts football clinics and produces the Coach of the Year Football Manuals. A 1958 graduate of Marshall University, he earned his M.Ed. and Rank I education certification from the University of Louisville. From 1958 to 1975, he coached football at various Louisville-area high schools. Among the honors he has been accorded are his appointments to the National Football Foundation and to the College Hall of Fame Advisory Committee on moving the museum to South Bend, Indiana. The citizens who build insulated domes over their houses in The Dome escalate their ambitions to great literal and figurative heights, but the accomplishment becomes bittersweet. The uncontrollably amused adolescents in the book's title story, who gather together for laughing sessions, find something ultimately joyless in their mirth. As in earlier works like The Barnum Museum, Millhauser's tales evolve more like lyrical essays than like stories; the most breathlessly paced sound the most like essays. The painter at the center of A Precursor of the Cinema develops from entirely conventional works to paintings that blend photographic realism with inexplicable movement, to—something entirely new. Similarly, haute couture dresses grow in A Change in Fashion until the people beneath them disappear, and the socioeconomic tension Millhauser induces is as tight as a corset. Though his exaggerated outlook on contemporary life might seem to be at once uncomfortably clinical and fantastical, Millhauser's stories draw us in all the more powerfully, extending his peculiar domain further than ever.
